Native Americans could benefit from planting and harvesting their own gardens. Reservation gardens are a great way for Native Americans to earn income and teach the youth how to work the land. The produce from the garden could be sold to residents of nearby towns and cities, as well as to produce markets and other reservations. By offering the produce in nearby towns and cities, Native Americans have the opportunity to display a positive image of their culture and could potentially spark interest and tourism in their areas.

Reservation gardens offer Native American youth the chance to learn about their ancestry by becoming familiar with planting and harvesting produce grown on their own land. Youth will work side by side with tribe elders and leaders to learn this skill, and will potentially learn more about their culture through this intimate interaction. The reservation garden could also serve as an outlet to keep the youth occupied and out of trouble.

To ensure the success of the garden, all members of the reservation should participate in the development and maintenance. By doing this, residents will all have a general understanding of how to run the business and what is expected of each community member. The information doesn’t stop now.

There are unique opportunities within Native American reservations to provide community support and education. Reservations are usually tight-knit groups that have common ancestry, culture and religion. Central community centers can provide outlets for recreation, education and medical resources.

Providing for successful community support in the reservation starts with the family. Drug and alcohol programs are a necessity for young people as well as the adults. It is also important to establish a wellness clinic that promotes safe sex methods and prevention of sexually transmitted disease. Good prenatal care can be quite an asset, too.Additional information can be found at http://skillsinfo.wordpress.com/2011/10/04/australia-study-successful-youth-transitions-born-in-australia-is-a-risk-factor/.

Often times, young people get into trouble just out of boredom. Recreation areas and planning are a way to give them fun things to do and offers socialization. It can also divert their attention away from getting involved in gangs, drugs, and alcohol. Educational supplements such as Head-Start and GED programs ingrain the importance of education.

Individual and family counseling can offer strong support in the areas of mental illness, substance abuse, and abuse recovery. Nutritional programs such as food banks and soup kitchens give food and nutritional information for the young and the elderly. Healthy citizens make for a healthier reservation as a whole. When a community center actually incorporates the people themselves in planning and working, it is more apt to successfully meet the needs of the reservation and outlying urban areas.

There has been much debate over the Native American reservations and the debate will probably continue for many years to come. While the U.S. continues to thrive, even in light of the weak economy, Native American reservations have become some of the poorest places in the world. With a very high rate of suicide and alcohol addiction, it’s no wonder that so many politicians want to tighten up rules regarding drugs and alcohol on the reservation. It has become evident that while this is no simple issue, something has to be done and it has been left up to those governing the U.S. to heighten awareness.

Ever since Native Americans were forced onto reservations in order to freely continue their way of life, they have had ever-increasingly serious problems with alcohol. While many experts suspect it is mainly due to depression from having to leave a large portion of what was once their home behind them, the actual proven reasons are unknown. Reservation laws governing drug and alcohol consumption have become stricter over the last few years and some reservations have even become dry areas. Whatever the problem, it is hoped that through raising awareness, the amount of alcohol and drug abuse will drop significantly.

The health and history of the American Indian go largely hand in hand. Prior to European colonization, most Native Americans in North America lived in agricultural communities that subsisted primarily on the Three Sister crops of squash, maize, and beans. The diet was healthy, and though it was not paradise, the people lived their lives in a generally happy state without having to worry about smallpox, measles, malaria, alcoholism, or diabetes, though tuberculosis was present.
With the arrival of explorers and settlers from Europe, the world of the American Indian was turned upside down. Europeans brought many things that were deemed desirable by the Native Americans, such as horses and metal tools. But they also brought other things that were subtly malicious, such as the smallpox and measles bacteria, the mosquito that transmits the malaria parasite (which came over primarily on the slave ships), and mass production of fermented and distilled alcoholic beverages.
The diseases decimated the American Indian population, in some instances wiping out entire villages and towns shortly after European contact. The epidemics have long since passed, but they have been replaced over the last two centuries by the epidemics of alcoholism and diabetes. But there is hope now, through educational programs that seek to help the people of the American Indian community combat diabetes and alcoholism by means of a more healthy lifestyle, which would mean in part going back to eating the Three Sister crops they were growing 500 years ago.

Your journey to future success depends on your commitment to your goals. Creating a life plan can help you assess your current life and succeed in reaching your goals in the future. People that commit to a life plan often find greater success than those that have no blueprint for the way they live their lives. Create a life plan today to improve your future by following these tips.

Put Pen to Paper
The simple act of writing down your goals drastically increases your chances of meeting them. Start by making a list of your life’s ambitions, no matter how small or large. Do not censor yourself. Later, you can go back and refine your list, but for now just let your ideas and dreams flow.

Assess your Goals
Now that you have all your dreams on paper, carefully assess your ambitions. Be realistic, but not pessimistic. If your goal is to be a published author but you have never written a story, don’t expect to instantly pen a best seller. Instead, alter your goal to fit your reality. Maybe you could aim for publishing a blog or contributing to a local newspaper. Create a step-by-step plan for each of your goals and put it into action.

Finding your place in the world and your community is not an easy task. The Internet has made a the definition of community much more obscue than what it was in the past. In the previous centuries, the word usually meant to a physibacl place. When someone was asked, he may be able to find the location of any given community, be it a town or a city on a map. This is no longer the case.

A person trying to seek out his purpose can try to find answers in religion, spirituality or in a job placement test. All of these methods can provide guidance to the seeker after truth, but they cannot tell a person when he has found his calling.

A person generally knows what his calling is before he sets out on this path. A calling is a feeling about something a person would really like to do. The calling itself is not always about a profession where a person can make a lot of money. It is about service and feeling needed and appreiated. Finding a calling involves searching, trying things and most of all paying attention to what a person’s feelings are tell him. It is a hard process, but one that can be rewarding.

When thinking of American history, we often first think of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the colonial times, or of the Revolutionary War. We may even stop to pause to think about Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln, World War II or the Industrial Revolution. There are many things that make up American History, but it is important not to shy away from turning our attention to the people who were originally here before European settled here–to the people who kept this land fruitful and beautiful before it was heavily settled and became what we know today as America–the Native Americans. You can find a quick rundown here

There are many famous Native Americans throughout history including Sacajawea and Pocahontas. We also often reflect upon the Pilgrims and the Indians, or the Native Americans who helped the Pilgrims out during thanksgiving. These Native Americans assimilated well into American culture, and also helped settlers find their way around the block when they first got here. When we think of American history, it is important to think of the culture, the languages, the sacrifices, and the kindnesses that many native American warriors showed to settlers, despite being pushed off their lands and sent into reservations. The Native Americans have a rich history that should always be remembered and respected.
