Don’t let your next outdoor wedding or special event be a wash-out. Take the necessary steps to ensure that a flood won’t ruin the fun. If you are holding the event in an area away from your own home, you will need to visit the location soon after a heavy rain. This gives you the chance to discover ponds and puddles before you set up a canopy or tent in that area.
If the outdoor event is planned for a local park or playground, it’s not an option to bring in fill dirt to build up low-lying areas. These lands are owned and maintained by the local municipality, and they will not be receptive to your improvement plans. There are, however, temporary measures you can take to enhance and improve the foundation before staging an event. A word of caution is prudent here. Always ask permission before erecting or constructing anything on someone else’s property.
If you plan to set up chairs and tables, or declare an area a dance floor, you will need to make sure the ground is level and free of debris. If the ground is not too low, a simple tarp can be staked down as a temporary floor. This will keep the area dry and fairly clean. It will also be easy to disassemble at the end of your outdoor event. If the ground is soft or uneven, a simple wooden platform can be constructed using pallets covered with sheets of plywood. The entire structure can be covered with a tarp or canvas to hide imperfections and create a cleaner look.
If you decide to hold your outdoor event on your own property, you can be a bit more elaborate in your ground preparation prior to the big day. It may also be wise to call around for some flood insurance quotes, in the case that your preparations were not successful in preventing water damage.

A new study has found that 31.5 percent of Native American teenagers have substance abuse problems. The drug abuse rates for teenage Native Americans are higher than they are for White Americans, which is 23 percent and Black Americans, which is 5 percent.
